With a population of about 74,500, the Bru-Van Kieu, a Mon-Khmer linguistic group, are mostly found in hilly regions of the central provinces of Quang Tri, Quang Binh, and Thua Thien Hue. Originally from central Laos, the Bru-Van Kieu moved to Vietnam through historical upheavals and settled in Quang Tri province's western region. The tribe made its home near Van Kieu Mountain, and it later adopted this mountain's name. Rice and other crops are grown by the Bru-Van Kieu in both flat and mountainous places as their primary source of subsistence.
